Coming Together for BIPoCs & Allies – Floyd Memorial and Solidarity

On Monday, June 1st, we, BIPoCs are gathering in Rosengarten for a memorial moment. We are remembering the murdering of Black people by institutionalized racism in US, Switzerland and elsewhere – Remembering George Floyd & Breonna Taylor (US), Mike Ben Peter (CH), Oury Jalloh (DE), David Nascimento dos Santos & Ágatha Vitória Sales Félix (BR), Adama Traoré (FR)… The gathering will be a place for mourning and solidarity, as the names of people we have lost will be mentioned in memory. There will be an open stage for an hour, in which everyone is welcome to say a few, sing a song, or recite poetry.

In order to keep everyone safe from Covid-19, we will be ensuring that a 1-meter distance is kept between participants. Please come with a mask if you want.

Dear friends,
Our encounter today may have way more people that we expect.
To avoid Corona spreading or unnecessary intervention – we have no authorization for a big manifestation, no authorization to use a microphone, sound or whatsoever. Therefore, we decided to split people in groups – That allows us to keep distance, allows people to hear all the interventions, bring us together, permit us do healing and exchange.

Therefore, we have some advises:
– Less than 30 people for “stage” – minimum 1 meter of distance between people
– Please stay seated most part of the time (except for the kids) – specially around the person who is talking
– Bring your mask, if you have more than one, please offer them to someone else
– Exchange with your neighbors and use this time to show BIPoC kids that they are not alone
– This is a space of healing and empowering
– In case the police will come to talk – please tell them they should talk with the people responsible for this contact – they will have a bandage on their arm
– We need no more pain – please avoid any violent encounters
– If you are target or witness racism, sexism, trans-homophobia or any other way of discrimination – please address yourself to one of the speakers
– Be careful with the kids around, they are there to witness that we are a community and a family that cares for them and each other – Be an example

400 Menschen trauerten in Bern um George Floyd
Am Montagnachmittag fand im Berner Rosengarten eine Kundgebung statt, um des Afroamerikaners George Floyd zu gedenken, der in den USA bei einem Polizeieinsatz gestorben ist. c

Am Pfingstmontag haben sich rund 400 Menschen im Berner Rosengarten versammelt, um schwarzen Menschen zu gedenken, die durch «institutionalisierten Rassismus ermordet wurden», wie es in einem Aufruf für die Versammlung hiess. Es wurden Reden gehalten und Musik gespielt, die Stimmung war friedlich. Gegen 17 Uhr löste sich die Versammlung auf. Der Aufruf war keiner bestimmten Organisation oder Gruppierung zuzuschreiben. Der Flyer richtete sich an BIPoCs (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour). Wegen Corona wurden die Teilnehmenden dazu aufgerufen, einen Meter Abstand voneinander zu halten und eine Schutzmaske zu tragen.

Die Berner Kantonspolizei liess die Veranstaltung gewähren. «Im Sinne der Verhältnismässigkeit und mit dem Augenmass, welches wir in den letzten Wochen immer angewandt hatten, wurde entschieden, auf eine direkte Intervention zu verzichten», heisst es bei der Medienstelle. Die Stimmung sei aus polizeilicher Sicht jederzeit friedlich gewesen. Die Polizei habe das Gespräch mit den Teilnehmenden gesucht und insbesondere für die Einhaltung der Schutzmassnahmen sensibilisiert. «Die Personen waren darum bemüht, die Schutz- und Hygienemassnahmen einzuhalten, trugen vielfach auch Schutzmasken und trafen aktiv Hygienemassnahmen.»

Anlass für die Kundgebung war der Tod von George Floyd, einem Afroamerikaner, der vergangene Woche in Minneapolis während eines Polizeieinsatzes gestorben ist. Darauf kam es in den ganzen USA zu Demonstrationen gegen Gewalt an schwarzen Menschen durch die Polizei. Teilweise wurden diese von massiven Ausschreitungen begleitet.
